What is the best AI humanizer in 2026?
ClearScript is the best AI humanizer we tested in 2026. It kept 97.5% of the meaning in our drafts, read the most like a person in blind reviews and posted the lowest detector scores, with 9 of 10 drafts passing both detectors. GPTHuman came second but lost more detail.
| Tool | Score | Best for | Paid from | Words per run |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ClearScript | 9.3/10 | Best AI humanizer overall | $9.99/mo (billed yearly) or $4.99 (7-day access) | 10,000 words |
| GPTHuman | 8.3/10 | Tone presets by school level | $8.25/mo (billed yearly) | 2,500 words |

You can tell when a draft came out of a chatbot. The sentences march at the same width, the transitions arrive on rails, and every paragraph makes exactly one point. It reads the way a hotel lobby looks: nothing wrong, nothing yours. Teachers read stacks of these every week, and detectors hand them a number to act on. So do managers.
Search for the best AI humanizer and you mostly get pages written by the humanizers themselves, scores climbing in a straight line toward whoever owns the site. So I ran a bench test instead: 10 AI drafts through 8 humanizers, all 80 rewrites read against their originals line by line, then rescanned on two detectors nobody here owns.
One tool kept 97.5% of the meaning and passed 9 of the 10 drafts. Another passed 2. The distance between those two numbers is this whole page.
Check your own draft before trusting any list.
The AI check costs nothing, takes no card and marks the sentences that read machine-written.
What makes the best AI humanizer?
A humanizer has one job: keep what you said while changing how it sounds. Most tools flip that: they swap vocabulary until a detector loses interest, and the draft no longer argues what you argued. Four things set this ranking, weighted by the damage each does when it fails.
- Meaning kept (35%). Before any tool ran, I logged every claim, figure, name, quote and citation across the 10 drafts: 318 items. If "fell 14%" comes back as "fell noticeably", points come off, however pretty the sentence looks.
- Reads human (25%). Two editors rated every rewrite blind, 0 to 10; three AI graders from rival model families scored them as well. The number is the average of both panels.
- Detector rescan (25%). Each rewrite ran through GPTZero's free checker plus a paid Originality.ai scan. Passing means both land under 20% AI. Neither number came from a tool on this list.
- Cost and usability (15%). Words per run, price per word, language coverage, and whether tone controls and a detector ship in the same plan.
Each axis scores 0 to 10, and the overall is the weighted sum rounded to one decimal. Every tool below shows its four sub-scores next to the overall, so the math on this page is yours to redo.
8 best AI humanizers on identical drafts
I took the seven names this search keeps surfacing (GPTHuman, Undetectable AI, Humanize AI Pro, QuillBot, WriteHuman, StealthWriter, Phrasly), added ours, and fed all eight an identical set of AI-written drafts: four student papers, two research abstracts, two work documents, two blog posts. Seven ran in English, joined by one in Spanish, one in French and one in Brazilian Portuguese: 5,240 words in total, 180 to 1,180 per draft. Each tool got one pass per draft on the settings it defaults to or recommends, and nobody edited the output by hand. Testing ran from October 5 to 9, 2026.
Feature lists come off each tool's own pages; pricing is dated where we read it. The prompt for the first essay:
You are writing a paper for a first-year seminar. Produce an argumentative essay of about 450 words on whether universities should let students use AI tools on graded assignments. Take one side, keep the register formal, and cite two real sources.

Overall score: 9.3/10 (meaning 9.9, reads human 9.4, detectors 9.2, value 8.0)
It wins, and the margin wasn't close. It kept 97.5% of the meaning while posting the lowest detector averages; every other tool traded one for the other.
I ran the ClearScript humanizer on the $4.99 trial (7 days, then $29.99 a month), Auto tone, Balanced strength, one pass per draft. The 1,180-word policy summary fit in a single run.

The raw essay first, scored on our own free checker for the before picture:

After one pass through the humanizer: 4% AI on GPTZero and 9% on Originality.ai on average, with 9 of the 10 drafts passing both detectors.
The rewrites win on shape, not synonyms. Two tidy sentences fuse into a longer one with the concession tucked inside it. A sentence that carried nothing gets cut instead of decorated. Reading all 80 pairs side by side took most of a day; the gap opened on the details: the essay's citations and all 14 figures in the policy summary survived in place, including a "12.4%" inside a sentence the tool had otherwise rebuilt, which is exactly where the rivals bled points.
The one miss matters more than the nine passes, so here it is. A 180-word French abstract, the shortest draft in the set, came back at 31% AI on Originality.ai after one pass. Short formal text gives any humanizer almost nothing to work with (more below), and a second pass would probably have cleared it, but the rules said one pass, so 9 of 10 stands. I would rather print the failure than drop it from the averages. It stayed in; every number above includes it.
Best for: drafts where the facts have to survive: cited essays, reports full of figures, anything not written in English.

Overall score: 8.3/10 (meaning 8.7, reads human 8.7, detectors 8.3, value 6.9)
GPTHuman is the page Google puts first for this search, largely on the strength of its own ranking article. Credit where due: the rewrites read well.
I used the Starter plan ($15 a month), College tone, Balanced mode, one pass per draft. Starter limits a run to 1,000 words, so the policy summary went in as two pieces.

After its pass: 10% AI on GPTZero, 22% on Originality.ai on average, and six drafts out of ten passed both.

The College preset gave the essays a believable register, and the blind readers put GPTHuman second for readability. Where it slipped was detail. It rounded figures in three drafts out of ten, and in one abstract "a sample of 214 patients" came back as "a large patient sample". You only catch that reading against the original, which most buyers never do.
Best for: writers who want a register dial by school level and check their numbers.

Overall score: 8.2/10 (meaning 8.9, reads human 7.7, detectors 7.8, value 8.1)
Undetectable AI is the oldest big name here, and a few rival lists skip it entirely.
I ran the 10,000-word yearly plan ($5 a month, billed $60 once) on default settings, one pass per draft.

Averages after its pass: 14% on GPTZero, 28% on Originality.ai. Five of ten drafts passed both.
It preserved 90% of the meaning, better than every rival except QuillBot. The problem arrived in the blind reads. Sentences returned grammatical but rigid, and Originality.ai hit the formal drafts much harder than the casual ones; the two abstracts carried most of that 28%. Reread each output, smooth two or three sentences yourself, and the value case is real.
Best for: cost-conscious writers with steady monthly volume who reread every output.
What we liked
- Starts at $5 monthly when billed yearly, for 10,000 words
- AI detection unlimited on all plans
- Refunds when output gets flagged, per the pricing page
What could be better

Overall score: 7.9/10 (meaning 8.6, reads human 7.4, detectors 8.5, value 6.4)
Most of its search traffic is really looking for the free mode, which works with no login. I tested the Lite plan ($9.99 a month) on Standard mode, one pass per draft, splitting drafts at its input limit.

Averages: 9% on GPTZero (the strongest rival showing there), 25% on Originality.ai. Six of ten drafts passed both.
The writing itself was loose. Qualifiers that carried meaning went missing ("in most cases", "per the 2024 survey"), and a citation vanished from 2 of the essays. On a blog post that costs you a reread. On a paper with a reference list, it costs you a grade. The keyword lock earns its mention: pin a product name or a technical term and it survives untouched.
Best for: fast, low-stakes rewrites with no signup.
What we liked
- Free rewrites with no account
- Best rival average on GPTZero
- Six modes, Academic and Formal among them
What could be better
- A citation vanished in 2 of the 10 drafts
- Originality.ai weaker, 25% AI on average

Overall score: 7.8/10 (meaning 9.3, reads human 7.5, detectors 7.2, value 6.1)
WriteHuman is the polite one in the group: gentle rewrites that keep your figures, priced by request instead of by word. I ran the Basic plan ($20 a month), default settings, one pass per draft. Basic allows 80 requests a month and 600 words a run, so the policy summary and the two blog posts went in as pieces.

Averages after: 17% on GPTZero, 31% on Originality.ai; five drafts of ten passed both.
Meaning retention came in at 92%, third behind ClearScript and QuillBot, and it holds because the rewrite stays polite: synonyms and soft reordering, little surgery. Detectors read straight through polite on the formal drafts. The caps are the real ceiling: 600 words a run on Basic chops anything chapter-sized into pieces, and 80 requests a month is one busy week, not a month.
Best for: short, careful rewrites when the facts matter more than the score.
What we liked
- 92% meaning kept, third best on the bench
- A free trial to test your own paragraph first
- 2, 3 or 5 output variations per run, by plan
What could be better
- 600 words per run on Basic (3,000 on Unlimited)
- 80 requests a month runs out fast
Features of WriteHuman
- Monthly request caps: 80 on Basic, 200 on Standard, unlimited on Unlimited.

Overall score: 7.7/10 (meaning 9.5, reads human 7.1, detectors 5.4, value 8.0)
QuillBot is the paraphraser half the students you know already use, and its humanizer sits in the same tab. I ran Premium ($19.95 a month) with the humanizer's default setting, one pass per draft.

Averages after: 38% on GPTZero, 54% on Originality.ai. Two drafts of ten passed both, the weakest showing on the bench.
QuillBot held 96% of the meaning, ahead of every other rival, by barely touching anything. A synonym here, a reordered clause there, the rhythm unchanged. Rhythm is what detectors measure, so the formal drafts came back nearly as AI as they went in. That's the trade at the center of this category: cautious tools keep your meaning and your score, aggressive tools move the score and eat the meaning. QuillBot is the cautious extreme.
Best for: gentle polishing when the suite is already on your card.
What we liked
- Best meaning retention of any rival
- Inexpensive on yearly billing
What could be better
- Only 2 drafts out of 10 passed both detectors
- The free humanizer caps at 125 words a run
Features of QuillBot
- The humanizer sits inside a writing suite built around the paraphraser.
- Grammar checker, summarizer, citation generator and AI detector.
- A browser extension and Microsoft Word add-in.

Overall score: 7.4/10 (meaning 7.9, reads human 6.8, detectors 8.0, value 6.2)
StealthWriter surfaces for nearly every "humanize AI" query, and its pricing page is the clearest in the group. I ran the Starter plan ($20 a month) on the Ghost 5.2 Pro model, default settings, one pass per draft.

Averages after: 12% on GPTZero, 26% on Originality.ai; six drafts out of ten passed. Its own built-in panel scored the essay rewrite 94% human, for whatever self-scoring is worth:

StealthWriter attacks detectors, and it shows. Sentences return chopped short, with word choices a careful reader will trip over ("plethora" where the draft said "a lot"). Meaning retention came in at 80%, and blind readers placed it second from last. You pass more checks than QuillBot, and you pay with ten minutes of manual repair.
Best for: testing a humanizer at no cost, or big inputs if you're willing to edit.
What we liked
- The strongest free tier here: 10 runs a day at 1,000 words each
- Inputs up to 5,000 words on all paid plans

What could be better

Phrasly sells a $2 three-day pass, the offer that makes sense at midnight before a submission. I ran the Aggressive level, one pass per draft; the two longest drafts went in split at paragraph boundaries.
Averages: 20% on GPTZero, 34% on Originality.ai; 4 drafts out of 10 passed.

Aggressive rewrites hard, and not always well. Three drafts came back with words fused together or sentences that stopped parsing, the kind of slip a tired TA catches at a glance and a detector doesn't care about. Meaning retention was 78%, the lowest on the bench. The gentler levels read cleaner and nudge detector scores less.
Best for: a lone short assignment when money is tight, with a careful reread after.

How do you humanize AI text?
Whatever tool you pick, the workflow is identical: find the flagged sentences, rewrite in a tone that suits the piece, reread against your original, rescan, then add something the model couldn't know.
- Scan first. Run the draft through a free AI detector; note which sentences light up. Those are the ones that need work.
- Choose the tone and strength deliberately. Auto keeps your voice in ClearScript; Light moves the least. Keep Strong for anything that reads like a press release.
- Read it against your original. Check each figure, name, quote and citation. Buyers skip this step; it catches a dropped source before your professor does.
- Rescan. One stubborn paragraph still scoring high? Rewrite that paragraph alone instead of the whole document.
- Add something only you have. A line from your lecture notes, your client call, your week. No tool invents that sentence for you.
If English is not your first language, close with a grammar pass.
Detectors get it wrong
Detector scores are estimates; the errors run in both directions. A Stanford study ran 91 essays from non-native English writers through seven popular detectors: on average, 61% of the human essays were flagged as AI, and 89 of the 91 were flagged by at least one detector. Human writing, no AI involved.
Keep your drafts and version history. If anyone asks how the piece was written, a revision trail says more than any score.
Short and formal texts
Below roughly 200 words, detectors have too little to measure, and the same paragraph can score 12% on Monday and 40% on Tuesday. Formal academic prose has the opposite problem: it is uniform by design, exactly the pattern detectors punish. Our own miss was a 180-word French abstract, so I mean this literally. For texts like that, run Academic tone at Light strength and check every citation twice.
Check your text before anyone else does.
Drop the draft into our free checker; every sentence gets its own score.
How we review AI humanizers
Everything in this ranking is built to be rerunnable. Between October 5 and 9, 2026, I ran 10 drafts (5,240 words all told, running 180 to 1,180 each) through all 8 tools: 80 rewrites. Every tool saw each draft exactly once, on the settings it defaults to or recommends, on the cheapest paid plan that could handle the test. Anything over a plan's per-run cap went in split at paragraph boundaries; no hand edits anywhere.
For meaning, I read each rewrite against its original line by line and checked 318 logged items: claims, figures, names, quotes, citations. For readability, two editors read blind and scored 0 to 10; three AI graders from rival model families did the same, and I averaged the two panels. Detector numbers came out of GPTZero's free checker plus a paid Originality.ai account. Our own detector scored nothing. Every plan was paid for, and this post carries no affiliate links.
Limitations
- Ten drafts make a small sample: they show how each tool behaved this week, not what it will do to yours.
- One pass per tool. Running a second pass tends to lower detector scores while costing meaning; that trade is yours.
- Turnitin lives inside school accounts and nowhere else, so it stays out of this test. Nothing on this list, us included, can honestly promise you a Turnitin score.
- Detectors retrain and prices move. Rival prices were read on September 23, 2026 (WriteHuman's on October 13, 2026); three pricing pages blocked us, and those tables say so.
- Detector scores are estimates, and a score is an estimate on the day it ran; retrained models move the numbers. Spot an error or a stale figure? Tell us.

One name, then the caveat. ClearScript tops our 2026 bench test: 97.5% of the meaning kept, the strongest blind reads, the lowest detector averages, 10,000 words per run, starting at $4.99 for 7 days (all plans). GPTHuman is the runner-up if its tone presets appeal and you verify your numbers. On yearly billing, Undetectable AI is the low-cost entry if you reread the output.
The caveat covers the whole category, us included: a detector score is only an estimate; no humanizer controls the checker at the other end. So skip the trust exercise. Take a paragraph from your own draft, run the free check, humanize it, and compare the two versions.
Bring one paragraph you actually wrote.
Run the free check, humanize the flagged sentences, read the two versions side by side. Sixty seconds, roughly.
